Imagine waking up, grabbing your fishing pole and walking out your back door to your own slice of Colorado Gold Medal Waters. In the Roaring Fork Valley, this dream is highly achievable.
In the Roaring Fork Valley, there are 36 miles of Gold Medal Waters. 14 miles of the Frying Pan River, below the Ruedi Dam downstream to the confluence of the Roaring Fork River are designated as Gold Medal Waters. The 22 miles of the Roaring Fork River, where it meets the Frying pan, down to where it collides with the Colorado River in Glenwood Springs, have also attained Gold Medal status.
Other notable bodies of water in the area are the Ruedi Reservoir, which sits on the Frying Pan River, just outside of Basalt. Here you can take your motorized boat out for a day on the water. The Crystal River, which starts in Gunnison County continues south of Carbondale, where it meets the Roaring Fork River. The Crystal River is also a great spot for fishing.
Year Round Fishing
No matter the time of year, fishing in the Roaring Fork Valley offers something for every level, and any challenge you seek.
Summer is an excellent time for exploring high mountain streams and rivers. The summer season experiences large hatches of Green Drakes, Pale Morning Duns, Blue-Winged Olives, and many different caddis.
The weather and color in the autumn provides an incredible backdrop for float fishing on the larger rivers. The hustle of the summer tourist season has died down, yet there are still plenty of trout to be caught. Green Drake continue to hatch on the Frying Pan well into September.
During the winter, crowds are skiing, and the low flows of the rivers give way for anglers to catch some of the largest trout most will ever see in their lifetime. Anglers regularly find trout in excess of 10 pounds.
In most parts of the country spring is often inconsistent for trout because of runoff. However, with the conditions on the Frying Pan, spring can present some of the best opportunities. Mayflies will start to blanket the waters in mid-March and continue well into June.

River Recreation
The rivers in the valley offer many other opportunities for outdoor fun. There are many trails along the rivers and streams in the Valley. White water rafting, paddle boarding and floating are popular summer activities on many of the rivers.
Stand up paddle boarding is popular at Stillwater, on the Roaring Fork River, just east of downtown Aspen. The river here runs through the Northstar Nature Preserve.
For a those a bit more adventurous, take a trip down the river in a kayak or raft. Ranging from class II to class III rapids, the Roaring Fork River offers something for everyone.
The White River National Forest offers 2.3 million acres of trails, camping, hiking, mountain biking and hunting.
